Cursor Router: Automatic AI Model Selection with 30–60% Lower Cost — Three Modes: Intelligence, Balance, Cost
What's new
- Cursor Router: intelligent request-level classifier that selects the right model for each coding request
- Three modes: Intelligence (frontier quality, close to Fable 5), Balance (strong everyday output), Cost (maximum savings while preserving capability)
- Measured cost: cost per commit — $4.63 Balance, $6.76 Intelligence vs. $7.34 Opus 4.8, $12.69 Fable 5
- Output satisfaction: Auto Intelligence mode approaches Fable on user satisfaction at ~60% lower cost for teams
- Default-on: Router is enabled by default for Teams plans; Enterprise admins enable it from the dashboard
- Availability: desktop, web, iOS, CLI, and Cursor SDK
Why it matters
For teams, Cursor Router changes the economics of AI-assisted coding — instead of paying frontier model prices for every request, you pay frontier prices only when genuinely needed. It horizontally benchmarks models at the request level, something that was previously a manual process.
How to try it
Cursor Router is on by default for Teams plans. Go to Settings > Models to select preferred mode (Intelligence / Balance / Cost). Enterprise: enable via admin dashboard.
