What happened

Judge Araceli Martínez-Olguín of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California granted final approval on July 21, 2026 to a class-action settlement between authors and Anthropic. It is the first major settlement among dozens of ongoing AI copyright lawsuits.

Context and impact

Anthropic obtained books through legitimate purchases and from piracy sites like Library Genesis and Pirate Library Mirror. Judge Alsup previously ruled that training AI on copyrighted works is fair use — but the illegal acquisition method violated the law. Because Anthropic settled without appeal, the case creates no binding precedent for ongoing cases against Google, Meta, Midjourney, or OpenAI.
