OpenAI confidentially files for IPO, a week after Anthropic
What happened
On June 8, 2026 OpenAI publicly confirmed it filed a confidential S-1 with the SEC. A week earlier (June 1) Anthropic took the same step. OpenAI was last valued at $852B, Anthropic at $965B.
Context and impact
Both IPOs will be a litmus test of investor appetite for AI after months of market turbulence around Mythos and Apple WWDC. OpenAI's blog said the timing 'may be a while' because 'there are things easier to do as a private company.' In other words: the filing is a defensive move against leaks, not a commitment to go public soon.
