Apple unveils new Siri AI built around Google Gemini
What happened
At WWDC 2026 (June 8) Apple announced a redesigned Siri and Apple Intelligence stack in iOS 27/macOS 27. Siri gets a stand-alone app, multi-turn conversation and visual intelligence; the backend runs on a new Apple Foundation Model 'AFM Cloud Pro' co-developed with Google's Gemini frontier models.
Context and impact
Apple has lagged OpenAI and Anthropic for years. Publicly admitting that its top quality relies on a Google partnership is a strategic pivot — Apple is openly shifting from 'small on-device model' to 'rented frontier provider'. Nvidia is providing hardware (CPU/GPU collaboration). For developers it means systemwide dictation, Spotlight actions, cross-app context awareness and Messages reply suggestions.
Details
- AFM Cloud Pro = quality comparable to Gemini Frontier
- Siri standalone app plus systemwide integration
- Visual intelligence in Spotlight and the Phone app (context from Mail/Messages during a call)
- Tim Cook's final WWDC as CEO — AI is the headline legacy bet
