GitHub Copilot: Desktop App Now Available to All Plans + GPT-5.6 (Sol/Terra/Luna) Rolling Out

What's new

• Copilot Desktop App (all plans): available from July 7 to Copilot Free, GitHub Education, and all paid plans — each agent session runs in an isolated git worktree
• Parallel tasks: multiple agent sessions without conflicts thanks to isolated worktrees
• GPT-5.6 Sol: for Copilot Pro+, Max, Business, Enterprise — highest reasoning ceiling for complex coding tasks
• GPT-5.6 Terra: for Pro and above — balanced default for everyday tasks
• GPT-5.6 Luna: for Pro and above — fast, cheap option for smaller tasks
• Admin management: GPT-5.6 models must be explicitly enabled by administrators in Copilot settings (off by default)
• Repository Overview: Copilot can auto-generate a repo overview and README for undocumented repositories

Why it matters

Opening the desktop app to the Free plan dramatically expands access to agent-native development workflows. GPT-5.6 Sol brings the highest reasoning ceiling in the family to enterprise developers directly in GitHub workflows.
