What happened

Google DeepMind delayed Gemini 3.5 Pro to July 17, 2026. The team scrapped the existing 2.5 Pro architecture for a complete rebuild to better compete with OpenAI GPT-5.6 and Anthropic Fable 5. The model remains in limited Vertex AI enterprise preview only.

Context and impact

Google missed its June GA commitment and is now five weeks past that target. On July 9, with both GPT-5.6 and Grok 4.5 publicly available, Gemini 3.5 Pro enters its most difficult competitive context. Gemini has overall crossed 900 million monthly users across 230 countries.
