What happened

Anthropic on the night of July 7–8, 2026 (3:00 AM ET) changed access to Claude Fable 5: the model is now on a usage-credit billing system at API rates instead of being included in subscription weekly limits.

Context and impact

Fable 5 (Anthropic's top-tier model) was previously included for Pro, Max, Team, and select Enterprise subscribers—drawing from their weekly usage limits. After the change, Fable 5 is no longer available in any plan for free. The change arrives alongside speculation about OpenAI's planned public release of GPT-5.6—tactical timing from both players.

• New pricing: $10/1M input tokens, $50/1M output tokens (2× Opus 4.8 at $5/$25)
• Usage credits are enabled via Settings → Usage on claude.ai
• Without enabled credits, the model will simply not respond
• Unaffected: Opus 4.8, Sonnet 5, and Haiku remain within normal subscription limits
