OpenAI Expands Daybreak to Help Defenders Patch Flaws
What happened
OpenAI on June 22 significantly expanded Daybreak — its cyber-defense initiative. The company shipped a full version of GPT-5.5-Cyber, upgraded Codex Security, opened a partner program for security vendors, and launched 'Patch the Planet' for open source.
Context and impact
Daybreak is OpenAI's answer to Anthropic Project Glasswing. The race for an AI cybersecurity stack is intensifying — especially after the Five Eyes warning the same week. Public backing of cURL, Go and Python could meaningfully shift vulnerability response in OSS. For CrowdStrike, Sophos and Fortinet it's access to OpenAI frontier models inside their own products.
Details
- GPT-5.5-Cyber: 85.6% on CyberGym (vs. 81.8% base GPT-5.5)
- Codex Security: 30M+ commits scanned, 500K+ findings fixed
- Patch the Planet: 30+ projects incl. cURL, Go, Python (w/ Trail of Bits)
- Partner program: CrowdStrike, Sophos, Fortinet and more
- Access: limited release to verified defenders
